Philosophy meets art (5), Lecture/Discussion

Friday, February 23rd, 2018 - 7:00-8:30 p. m.

Athens-based philosopher Marcos Breuer invites you to discuss about key philosophical dimensions underlying the work of art:

From 'mimesis' to 'autognosis': The aim of art in post-traditional societies

Art should be like that mirror

Which reveals to us our own face.

J. L. Borges

According to a traditional view, the purpose of representational arts (such us painting, theater, literature, etc.) was a skillful representation of objects and events that were considered 'worth-copying.' But the so-called post-modern criticisms on the traditional paradigm centered on 'mimesis' triggered a philosophical debate about the aim of the artistic work in our culture. At this meeting we are going to talk about the transition from the traditional to the contemporary understanding of art. Does the new aesthetic paradigm aim at reaching self-knowledge ('autognosis')? Drawing on some ideas of the Argentine writer and essayist Jorge Luis Borges, we will explore the meaning of contemporary art.
